Muizenberg Comminitree Mural Project

If There was a Mural in Muizenberg what Story Would it tell ? What Would it look like, What would it feel like, Where would it be?

Join us at the Communitree Heart Space to co-create a beautiful art work that celebrates who we are!

There will be a number of activities taking place from the 14th -21st Dec. feel free to drop in for any of them anytime!

A Mural can be much more than just picture on a wall, a mural could be an end result of an incredibly creative and community building adventure.

Wherever a Mural is placed an awareness is created for that immediate environment as something that reflects the people who live there. It draws attention to Human Culture and the current thinking bound up with it.

A Mural’s content becomes part of the dialogue and daily lives of all those who pass by it.

Up Coming Activities:

* 14th -17th Dec 6:00 -7:30pm : Breath Water Sound Workshop

Breath Water Sound is a free workshop offered by the Art of Living Foundation; that teaches simple yet powerful breathing, sound and meditation techniques which eliminate stress from the system so that the mind gains the clarity to solve problems. Most importantly, the course reminds communities of the power each individual has within, to make a difference and to be the change that they wish to see.

(participants must be able to attend all 4 sessions)

*14th Dec :Storytelling Mbiras Sessions and Collage 7:30 pm:

Lets explore together the Power of community and creativity. Ancient African Wisdom and Music of Mbira by Michael Chikowore together with a collage sessions by Claire Homewood and Lisa Martin.

* 14th-17th Dec 7:30. Creative Process Collage Workshop

The workshop will use the medium of collage and mixed media to brainstorm ideas for the final mural in Muizenberrg .The medium of collage provides the focus and brainstorming of ideas and impressions. Collage is a fantastic medium, quick, spontaneous, fun, but is also very telling in that it allows for a subconcious flow of energy to come through.

* 18th Dec: 2pm : Mural site/ location walkabout.

community are invited to take a walk through the streets of Muizenberg and spot and discuss potential mural sites.

* 21st Dec 10am: Mural Funding Brainstorming session

There is also an invitation for you to run a workshop or create an event which helps to gather ideas be they visual or conceptual for the mural - eg. take a group for a hike up the mountain and draw Muizenberg, photograph some fynbos, chat to some surfers about the project, do a workshop with school kids or any organisation already up and running in Muizenberg. The idea is to cast the net as far as possible and allow for everyone to be part of the process

During the week 14th-21st Dec there will be info available as well as the collage and other collected visual material up on a wall in the Heart Space for all to interact with.

350: a day of participation, creativity and eco-interaction....
with
.....market, music, food, film screenings, street performances and you....

On October 24th Palmer Rd will explode into a site of creative interactions where focus will be on the 350 drive: International Day of Climate Action

350 parts per million (ppm) is what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. Right now, mostly because we’ve burned so much fossil fuel, the atmospheric concentration of CO2 is 390 ppm.

If we can significantly limit our carbon emissions into the atmosphere, then forests and oceans will slowly suck some of it out of the air and return us to safe levels. We can change -- and now is the time to mobilise the world to swift and bold climate action, which is what's being planned internationally for the October 24th.

Saturday: October 24th

10 - 4pm

Palmer Rd, Muizenberg

Come along and enjoy!

The intention for this event day is to create a fun, lively street community feel with the added focus of seeing whats happening with participating projects and individuals who are working towards sustainable positive change. We would encourage everyone to make this day as carbon neutral as possible so why not hop on the train or car pool, bring used bags to carry home your purchases, help save paper by circulating this info via email, and just become a little more eco-aware in your purchases and habits.

A Big Gigantic Thank You!

...to all those who gave their time, energy and support to help create a fantastic day of eclectic Palmer Rd celebration!

Local belly dancer put on an impromptu show to entertain the crowd on Palmer Rd, Muizenberg.

We have received much positive feedback and can look forward to more markets to come. Our dinner hosted by Dijo African restaurant was a fabulous success as guests were welcomed by the beats of African drums and fire dancers then treated to a variety of vegetarian and fish dishes. Guests were then led next door into the Communitree space where a storytelling, musical and poetry performance enlivened creative palettes. The art auction which followed was an excellent contributor towards our fundraising as well as standing proud as an example of the fine artwork to be exhibited in the future of Communitree.

A holistic approach to cultivating creativity takes root in Muizenberg

Following a recent trend in Muizenberg towards community co-operation, the Communitree initiative looks set to make an exciting contribution to the artistic and holistic atmosphere of Muizenberg Village.

This ‘eclectic’ creative collective of artists, healers and workshop facilitators will be launching their groundbreaking initiative to work from a shared space in Palmer Road Muizenberg with a fundraising day on Saturday, 15 August.

A creative ‘ecosystem’

The Communitree project is based on a philosophy of community members working harmoniously together, without hierarchy, to form an ‘ecosystem’ supportive of the individuals making up the whole.

“Although we are a diverse group, we all share a common vision and values based on a sense of community”, said Communitree’s Lisa Martin, “It is an evolving concept, valuing transparency, respect of individuality and responsible pro-action.”

Another Communitree member, Claire Homewood added: “The Communitree concept has grown organically so far. It aims to provide a nurturing environment in which the unfurling potential of each individual can reveal itself in a celebration of creativity.”

The Communitree collective came about through several individuals contemplating renting a vacant space in Palmer Road, Muizenberg Village. They simultaneously envisioned an art, healing and outreach hub, and so came together to form Communitree – the vehicle through which they hope to make this creative shared space a reality.

A fundraising day packed with activities

The purpose of Communitree’s fundraising drive on 15 August is to collect enough money to pay the deposit towards renting the premises, and thus get the project off the ground.

There are lots of activities planned throughout the day. These include a colourful market to be held from 10am until 5pm at 37 Palmer Road, with a variety of children’s activities, a ping pong tournament, a raffle, organic food and music to add to the festivities.

In the evening there will be dance, poetry and storytelling performances set against a backdrop of artworks for sale in an auction taking place from 9pm at the Communitree premises (viewing from 7pm).

Also, a limited number of tickets are available for a luscious African vegetarian and fish feast at the adjacent Dijo restaurant, and thereafter the celebrations move to an after-party at the nearby Melting Pot.
